And So It begins

Hey, I’m Spec, or at least that is my preferred name. For the longest time, I have been passionate about writing. There is something magical about taking a blank page and filling it with words. Words of hope and despair, words of character and prose, words of beauty and inelegance. No matter what you write, it is a magical act. An act of creation, of expression, an act of true human joy. There is no other animal on this planet that creates in the way we do. No meaningful art, no literature, no ballads or novels, poetry or song. But humans, we are magical, beautiful creatures.

Many people write for a whole host of reasons, some of us journal to work through the emotional toils of the day, others write songs for their loved ones and some write for the pure pleasure of writing. But, no matter your reasoning, no matter your aims, goals or aspirations, you write, and this my friend makes you just as magical as any other writer in our history.

For most of us, writing will only ever be a pastime, something we do when we have free time. To please ourselves and possibly share it with friends and loved ones. Rarely do we manage to take an idea, some subconscious thought, and develop it further. And it is even more rare to have taken the time to write it down, to build upon it, and to write something of such a significance that it will be published. But does that really matter?

I guess it depends on what kind of person you are, and what are your aims for writing. Do you write purely for the joy, purely for the thrill of creating your own world filled with your own people? Or do you write with the anticipation of getting published, becoming rich, or famous even? There’s nothing wrong with either of those motivations, and I feel most of us fall somewhere in between. Would I like to be published, one hundred per cent, no questions asked? But also, if I were never to be published, I don’t see that as a failure. Like life, writing is a journey, and no matter where on your journey you are, I hope you are happy, healthy and most importantly, proud of what you have created.
